How to make your own wool dryer balls!

With just a few supplies and easy steps you can make your own all natural wool dryer balls! Read on to find out about these amazing pretty little things!

These felted yarn balls take place of dryer sheets! 

• They do a great job softening up your cloth diapers and clothes!
• Absorbs excess water in dryer
• Anti-microbial
• Cut down on drying time and static. 
• All natural and green choice for laundry
• Save money and time! 
• Re-use for years!

Now onto the tutorial!

SUPPLIES for this project include

• Package of 100% wool yarn. (make sure to check label and it says 100% wool, my package made three dryer balls)
• Knee high nylon, socks, or pantyhose
• Scissors
• Scrap yarn that is NOT wool 
• Crochet needle (optional)
• Essential Oils for scents (optional)
• Washer/Dryer

• Start by wrapping yarn around your finger to about 1/2" in width

• Pull away from fingers and wrap yarn the opposite way to create something that looks like this: sorta looks like a bow to me!

Continue wrapping ....

Go back and forth between each direction..you will start to get momentum and the core of your dryer ball will start to form. Make sure you are wrapping tightly!

• This dryer ball looks ready for the first felting, It half the size of a tennis ball
• BUT first you need to tuck away that loose strand of yarn to secure it.

• To secure I used a knitting needle so push through...you CAN use your fingers just s easily to secure that loose end! Whatever is more convenient!

I made three of these balls with my one package of yarn!

• Place your dryer balls in your nylon or sock one at a time..secure with non wool yarn, rubber band..etc you really do not need the yarn..you can always knot it but you will need to un-knot after the first felting.
• Toss your secured nylon with yarn ball into a washing machine for a wash/rinse cycle with HOT wash COLD rinse! :)
• After wash cycle, toss into a DRYER cycle

DING! Washing and Drying time is up!!

• (If you want to add scent, I added some essential oil during this step and  then put the remainder yarn on)

• Add the rest of your yarn to make almost twice the size!
• Repeat the felting step one more time with your nylon sock!

And here they are, ready to get to work!!

Pocket Diapers with hemp inserts!

Pocket Diapers are a great style of washable reusable cloth diaper. They wick moisture from sensitive skin, so your baby feels dry. The waterproof shell is lined with super soft polyester suede cloth. Inside are removable hemp organic absorbent inserts. The inserts easily be removed with out touching wet inserts bu flipping up pocket opening and shaking out into diaper pail. Comes with your choice hook & loop or snap closures.  This style is great for naps or long periods of time like a road trips! One Size let's you use from birth to potty training!

Diaper rash creams and cloth diapers!

Diaper rash can be caused by a number of things most common are wetness, chaffing, new foods or infection (yeast). Time to reach for that diaper rash cream, but which one? Most commercial diaper creams are not cloth diaper safe, they contain certain ingredients  such as cod liver oil, waxes, and paraffin. These ingredients will create build up on the fibers of the diapers which will cause repelling (leaking). You might even get an unpleasant odor, after buildup has occurred. Luckily there are a couple of options AND cloth diaper safe cream available! You can even use some things that you might have in you own home!

• If you have commercial diaper cream on hand or an antibiotic cream your doctor has prescribed for your little one with yeast, your best options is to add a liner to your diaper. A liner is anything that will protect the diaper for example, an old cut up t-shirt, cloth wipe, wash cloth or disposable liners. For prefolds, Fancy Cloth Baby offers the "Stay Dry Snap Pouch" . Rinse off the ointment from liners before washing with your cloth diapers!

• Cloth Diaper safe Home remedies include coconut oil (which has anti-yeast properties), or olive oil. Cleanse your baby's bum with a warm wash cloth, gently pat not rub. Letting your baby air out will speed up healing as well!

Cloth Diapers: important reminders, tips, and trouble shoots

Welcome to Cloth Diapering! Glad you have made or are thinking about making the switch!

This page is dedicated to offering you important reminders about cloth diapering as well as some trouble shoot help. Cloth Diapers usually consists of two parts.

++One is the absorbent part which is always made up from a natural fiber. For Example, Hemp, Cotton, Bamboo. Called an insert, soaker, prefold, or fitted diaper

(Some inserts are topped with a stay dry polyester fabric that wicks the moisture away then is absorbed into the soaker underneath.)

++Second is the outer or diaper cover usually a laminate or water resistant shell. This part contains the moisture/waterproof (see diaper styles for a comparison of the different kinds of covers)

++Inserts should never be washed with fabric softener or dried with dryer sheets.

++Diaper cream can cause residue especially commercial brands with petroleum jelly, or fish oil. Use a stay dry liner to protect your inserts.

++Prep diapers/inserts first before FIRST time use. They will need to be washed atlest 3 times, fluffed in dryer between washings before absorbing fully. For shells, wash once, tumble dry and remove promptly.

++Cloth diapers add bulk so buy clothing accordingly you may have to size up especially with a non stretchy fabric.

LEAKS

Leaks can be caused from many things such as repelling, not enough absorbency or poor fit.

++Make sure your diapers fully prepped or you may need to add a booster pouch to gain more absorbency.

++Check fit on diapers around waist and legs. Make sure there are no gaps everything is snug and comfortable for baby. Is diaper fully covered?

++Repelling is caused from residue on inserts like diaper creams, or soap residue from using way too much soap or just not rinsing it out all the way.  Strip the diapers with a tbsp of blue dawn, full wash bin and rinse until the soap is all out, completely.  Having a good detergent makes cloth diapering easy peasy.

+During naps or night, have more absorbency directly in the wet zone. This is in the middle for girls and the front for boys using a booster, cloth wipe, something absorbent.

Cost Comparison of Fancy Cloth Baby VS Disposable

Cloth was estimated average of 18 diapers with each stage/size we offer using Fancy Cloth Baby!

AI2 OS ($395) and NB ($237)for a grand total of $682

Fitteds and Covers Grand Total was $778.45 with NB and One Size

2 dozen prefolds and 6 OS covers and 6 NB covers will cost 319.40  

Disposables Average about $$$800 PER YEAR/PER CHILD..The chart is showing the cost over a 2 and ½ year span. The cost will rise and rise until your child is potty trained or have more children with a grand total of $1875 dollars NOT INCLUDING the $158 for disposable wipes each child per year.

BAAAA-AMAZING WOOL CLOTH DIAPER COVERS QUICK GUIDE

..A fancy cloth baby  wool cover

Well, If you want to use the most natural choice...wool covers ARE the most natural way to keep your baby dry effeciently.

Everything from  upcycled wool sweaters, hand knitted soakers and longies to merino wool covers that snap. It may seem pricey at first BUT all cloth diapering is initial investment and what wool does is pretty worth it.

Wool offers
-breathability for keeping away diaper rash, maintaining normal body temperature that correlates with the outside temp.
-water resistance
-absorbs moisture
(yes it is both resistant and able to absorb..told ya it was amazing)
-less washing and more reusing

WASHING YOUR WOOL.
Wool does not haveto be washed UNLESS it gets SOILED or stained. Wool is naturally anti bacterial and should not be lanolized too often. Read Instructions on wool washes before use.
Always follow the manufactuers directions on care label of cover too!! (Has it been already lanolized? Is it machine washable? )

DO'S
-Use WARM water (hand washing or machine wash on gentle)
-Add wool wash
-Soak 30-60 mins
-GENTLY squeeze out water and transfer to towel
-Lay cover in between two towels roll up and press firmly to remove excess moisture
-Lay wool flat to dry. In some conditions, it can take up to 2 full days to dry !

DONT'S
-Do NOT dry your wool in the dryer unless you want it to shrink or felt
-Do NOT use COLD water
-Do NOT twist or wring out excess water.
-Do NOT Over Lanolize (ie using a wool wash with lanoline when not necc.)

++Most covers can handle gentle cycle on a machine and then laid flat to dry. If you hand wash, grab a bath towel, roll it up to get out any excess moisture, lay flat to dry.
++Felted wool covers can hold in moisture better.
++Easy and natural diaper system



LANOLIZE:

You will need to lanolize your wool covers. The lanoline is natural oil that repells moisture. It will keep your cover dry AND offers it's anti-bacterial properties alogn with it . This lanoline stuff ..ALSO keeps the smell of urine NEUTRALIZED! Lanolizing is pretty simple.

BE AWARE
-You wont' need to lanolize often becuase lanoline is present in the wool itself. When it stops repelling, and/or starts to smell is a good clue it needs to be lanolized
-Too much lanoline will cause a sticky STICKY mess.


WHAT DID I TELL YOU? Amazing. Use this guide for your wool especially if you have purchased a wool cover fromme. This is just a guide, not the end all be all though!! :)
